The Marathon is a long-distance running event with an official distance of 42.195 kilometers (26 mi. 385 yds.) that is usually run as a road race. More than 800 marathons are contested throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes. The larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants.

Annually, more than 800 marathons are organized worldwide. Five of the largest races, Boston, New York City, Chicago, London, and Berlin, form the biannual World Marathon Majors series, awarding $500,000 annually to the best overall male and female performers in the series.

Most participants do not run a
